“If you blame Native American communities for their poverty, remember that the entire continent was stolen from them …

If you blame Native American communities for their poverty, remember that the entire continent was stolen from them.

If you blame Black American communities for their relative poverty, remember that Black Americans were stolen from a continent, trafficked, and enslaved for nearly 300 years.

Tell me again about how your family ‘started from nothing’ when they immigrated. Didn’t they start from whiteness? Seems like a pretty good start.

The American Dream required dual genocides, but tell me again about fairness and equal opportunity. Tell me about democracy, modeled after the Iroquois Confederacy. Tell me your proud heritage, and I will show you the violence that made it so.”

Kim Katrin Crosby (via xuron)

Keynote Speaker for LGBTQ History Month at Dartmouth, on September 30, 2013, where quote is from.

Important. Especially the phrase “dual genocides.” Because clearly using Black bodies as tools to rebuild stolen and settled land from Native people who are dehumanized and killed via genocide as rationalized by the State makes the relationship between dehumanized stolen bodies without structural power on stolen land a different one from White bodies with structural power occupying land that is not theirs.

  1. Yes, our wonderful United States was built on lies, history is told by the victors. I am glad we are finally letting the truths of all People be told. Our Original Peoples believe in looking out for the “next seven Generations” and Respect for all of Creation. I am ashamed of my “whiteness” at times, although the blood that flows through my viens is blended. In my stillness I give Thanks for the French and Indians War still rages on inside me, it has helped to keep me honest! Wliwni
However today, we are all facing a new form of genocide…economic genocide, our social institions no longer function, we are being locked out of many things due to costs, our most basic of needs, food, housing, health and incomes are all under attack. Our democracy is just a word now without the true meaning. Most of our elected officals are all bought by the Greed of the few and the Oppression of the many. The American Dream is just that, a dream for far too many of us.
It is up to all of us to expose the the Truths. It is my hope that Folks would study the Iroquois Confederacy and rebuild an America we can all be proud of.

  2. Powerful quote there.
And I never think of Native Americans as the sole reason they are in poverty. They got there with a lot of help from the people who had no right to segregate them onto “lands”. It is disgusting how they have been treated for so long.
