This is one of my favorite childrens books to have come out in the last few years. A if for Activist by Innosanto Nagara . Our fantastic library has it both in English and Spanish. Even though it’s presented as an Alphabet Book in board book format, it’s such a different theme than the typical that it helps to hold older listener’s attention. The wonderful illustrations don’t hurt, either.
This is a timely book to read as kids are undoubtedly hearing talk of post-election current events. Some may want to know how to help and maybe this book doesn’t do exactly that but it does support the idea of standing up for and with others.
The page for the letter I is especially relevant right now…. I is for Indigenous and Immigrants.
My eldest daughter (nearly 20) says that the last page (Z is for Zapatista) is the best mic drop ending to a book ever. She’s not wrong.
Here is a video of Tom Morello reading it, with clear illustrations, so it works perfectly well if you can’t get your hands on a physical copy of the book.
